History: York Minster’s history began in 627AD when King Edwin of Northumbria was baptised in a simple wooden church at York within the site of the old Roman fort.

The foundations of the Roman Fort/Basilica, the Saxon Church, the Norman Cathedral and the current Plantagenet Cathedral are all stacked on top of each other.
There is an exhibition under floor of the central crossing to view said structures still in situ.
