The out come would have been a whole lot different if the defender would have been armed with good handgun.

Very likely the only reason he isn’t dead is that Mr. Vernon is 75. If he had been 20 years younger, the fight might have ended very differently for the perp, which is not to disparage Mr. Vernon in any way; at 75, you’re just not as powerful anymore. Mr. Vernon deserves every plaudit coming his way, and ought to get a seat in a nice parade car next Memorial Day for continuing to defend this country and everything it values and stands for.
