It's the oil, stupid.
That's what Russian President Vladimir Putin is really up to in Syria.
In the early 1970s, President Richard Nixon succeeded in pushing the Russians out of the Middle East. Today they're back with a vengeance, thanks to President Obama's policy of precipitous withdrawal from the region and overall neutering of American power.
Since Mr. Putin began his significant military deployment to Syria, observers have tried to get a handle on his motives from propping up his ally, Syrian President Bashar Assad, to using the intervention as a distraction from his Ukrainian intervention, to weakening NATO to satisfying the goals of the Russian Orthodox Church, to re-establishing a long-term strategic foothold in the Middle East.
All of these motives may be true. But they miss his far bigger gambit: seizing control of the majority of the world's oil.
Some, including Mr. Obama, have dismissed Mr. Putin's moves as ill-conceived and a sign of weakness. But Mr. Putin has never been naive or aimless. He coldly pursues Russia's national interests, and right now, its overriding interest is in reviving the Russian economy, which has been gutted by economic sanctions and cheap oil, and positioning Russia to be the globe's oil overlord. . .

It’s the oil, stupid.
Making Barack Obama look like a incompetent, spineless, bumbling idiot again is just an unplanned plus.
We have enough oil in the North America to last our country at least a century. We don’t need middle eastern oil anymore. If others do, let them protect it.
Obama must be an agent of Putin’s.
O was raised in a communist circle in Hawaii and Indonesia, and came to power through the Communists in Chicago.
His handler, Valerie Jarrett is a Communist.
Putin plays O like a puppet—now we know why O will not confront Putin on Syria.
Instead he deflects on the subject in a way that is totally disconnected from reality.
Well stated.
since Russia already has the Syrian Mediterranean port (which its expanding and adding a second one to)
Russia’s next objective is indeed the OIL
note: it is not necessary for Russia to seize all the oil, most of which is some hundreds of miles to the south of Russia’s current deployment
rather,
Russia will achieve a signficant stratetic objective just by:
1. stopping any Gulf/Saudi pipeline construction through Syria to Europe (this Russia has probably already achieved)
2. have her navy and air force forward=deployed in the eastern Mediterannean so as to be ABLE to interdict any oil or gas shipments via the Suez Canel to Europe (this Russia probably has already substantially achieved, but watch for any Russian expansion of activities with, say, Greece or maybe Greek Cyprus, etc. to reinforce this objective)
3. re-establishing closer military relations with Egypt adds to all of the above for Russia (note: this rappachment is reportedly already underway)
4. continue consturction of pipelines, etc., from Russian energy source districts to Europe (this is also underway)
The above will solidify Russia’s energy control of Europe.
Political ‘friendship treaties’ will follow in due course...
Russia thereby defeats or controls the Arab oil dictators, America, Germany ,and the rest of Europe.
Russia’s concerns with any Syrians are at best secondary to the above.
IMHO.

“Monica Crowley: Putin’s Real Target”
She is a babe.
It is also the port, stupid.
And honoring an alliance, stupid.
And killing Chechen jihadis, stupid.
And the testing of equipment and doctrine, stupid.
And halting bloody transnational regime building, stupid.
Not everyone is a simple cash whore like you in the media, stupid.
And come on. Who among you would not want to kick Obama in the butt when he is bent over like he’s bobbing for apples in front of a Saudi king? Part of it has to be the sheer fun of it all.
NO BLOOD FOR OIL ! NO BLOOD FOR OIL ! NO BLOOD FOR OIL !
Well, that’s what the media and the liberals use to cry about when GW Bush went into Iraq..
So were is the out cry from the media and liberals when the Russians do it ?
Silly me, I forgot, it’s bad when the big bad boogie man old USA goes into another country for oil...
See how they like it.
“The above will solidify Russias energy control of Europe.

As soon as Trump is Prez (and if it’s not too late), Trump can send troops into Iraq to wipe out ISIS there, and then take Iraq’s oil (no not all of it), like he has already suggested. Iraq’s leader though, being a Shi’ite, and now more closely allied with Iran and thus Russia, is contemplating inviting Putin into Iraq to fight ISIS there.
If he gets the invite, and Putin goes in there, then we’re in a pickle, and if it is a fait accompli before Trump becomes Prez, then he will have no good options in Syria or Iraq, thanks to the contemptible ignoramus in the WH. It’s like a race to the finish line of Obama’s Presidency and how much more damage he can do before then. I’m afraid it’s going to be plenty more.
One thing Prez Trump (I’m so sure it’s going to be Trump) can do is get our law changed so that we can export oil, thus lessening Europe’s dependency on Russia/Iran for oil. We will create lots of jobs here drilling for oil to export, while selling oil to western European countries that need it at a good but decent price, thus undercutting Russia and Iran, or at least supplementing the sales to Europe decreasing their need to find a safe and stable source of oil.
Great minds think alike..
No Monica, its the warm water ports.
First, for his navy.
Second, for commerce.
bttt
Cheap oil makes this less likely
Disagree slightly.
Obama is very connected to reality -- Putin's reality, and Obama's reality of damaging America and (he hopes) destroying Israel while leaving no fingerprints on the deed.
No, Obama's deflections and fronting-off are not "disconnected".
Not only that, but we BUY their oil we don't 'take' it. We can buy their oil no matter what thug is running the place... Businesses sell. That's what they do.
That's what tsarist Russia was after for years.
It's all the more important now that Ukraine is another country, and it's also a major reason why Russian wanted Crimea.
Plus, what kind of an empire are you if you don't have any bases abroad? Russia has bases in former USSR countries, Syria, Vietnam, and that's it (Cuba's under discussion, though).
Nice camel hair sweater!
Know how I can tell?
