State Rep. Jim Lyons has been named chairman of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz's presidential campaign in Massachusetts.

"I was honored to have the senator ask me to chair the campaign in Massachusetts," Lyons said. "What we're trying to do is build a team of activists in Massachusetts, and my role will be to work with the Cruz national campaign for a coordinated message with the folks in Massachusetts. there is a large contingency of supporters for Ted in Massachusetts."

Lyons and his wife Bernadette hosted a campaign party for Cruz at their home this past spring, which attracted an impressive 600 attendees. Lyons, a conservative Republican in what would seem like a New England sea of liberals and moderates, is drawn to Cruz's decisively conservative ideals and boldness.

"I think what Ted is is exactly what this country needs at this time," Lyons said. "He's someone who's willing to take on the establishment and the status quo in Washington. He is totally committed to the U.S. Constitution, which is something I think we've seen over the last several years has been ignored by the currect president. I think that's the primary thing, that he's a strong leader who articulates good, solid conservative values and who has shown that he's willing to take on the establishment in Washington."

Massachusetts will hold its primary on Super Tuesday, March 1. Other states voting that day will include Cruz's home state of Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Minnesota, Virginia, Vermont and Alabama, among several others.

In the meantime, Cruz has been focusing on Iowa, home of the first caucus, and New Hampshire, which will hold the nation's first primary.

"He did extremely well last week in Nashua at the Liberty Convention," Lyons said. The Liberty Caucus and its libertarian-leaning straw poll were thought to go overwhelming to U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, but Cruz came within 46 votes of Paul at the event. "He's attracting people throughout the entire base of the Republican party and he's doing extremely well fundraising. Right now I think he's positioning himself very well to get the nomination."

Lyons represents the 18th Essex District -- which includes parts of Andover, North Andover, Boxford and Tewksbury -- and was first elected in 2010 when voters ousted incumbent Barbara L'Italien. Two years later he won a rematch against L'Italien. He ran unopposed in 2014, in both the Republican primary and the general election.
