Integrating women into combat will eventually force lawmakers to have an "emotional discussion and debate" about whether women should also be part of the draft, the Army secretary said Monday.
John McHugh said it's still too early to discuss whether women should have to sign up for the Selective Service as men have. But, as the military drives toward a Jan. 1 deadline to open some or all combat positions to women, McHugh acknowledged the country will need to have the conversation if women have the same opportunities in the military as men.
"If your objective is true and pure equality, then you have to look at all aspects and at some point Selective Service will have to be one of those things considered very carefully," McHugh said on the first day of the Association of the United States Army's annual meeting in Washington.
The three service secretaries submitted their recommendations to Defense Secretary Ash Carter this month on whether any positions should remain closed to women. The Navy secretary did not request any exemptions for the Navy or Marine Corps, but it's unclear what recommendations the other services made.
Carter is expected to make a final decision on which, if any, positions will remain closed by Jan. 1 after hearing input from top service leaders.
McHugh noted that a change requiring women to sign up for the draft would have to come from Capitol Hill, not the Defense Department or individual services.
Why this even debatable is beyond me. Women want their equal place in the military, then they also register for the draft. Plus, when they get pregnant on active duty, their enlistment or commission should be extended by at least 9 months without pay since they already got paid for being pregnant.
No, this is the current Secretary of the Army who is apparently normal. The new one, who is an out homosexual, still has to be confirmed.
Voting should be contingent on having registered for Selective Service, for either sex.
Doubt such by true feminists, since they all want women to be men anyway.
I doubt if there will ever be a draft again. If there were a draft, anybody that did not want to go into the Army could flunk the drug test on purpose.
It really gets confusing.
The government should probably issue printed instructions.
Is a cross dressing male who decides he is now a woman (like Bruce “Caitlyn” Jenner) still obligated to sign up for the draft?
Can he/she/it be required to squeeze those new silicon boobs into a standard load bearing vest or ceramic plate body armor?
And what about a cross dressing female who decides she is now a male even though she retains her female plumbing?
Because this type of sexual weirdity is now considered to be normal these freaks cannot reasonably be excluded from any legal obligation of their declared gender because of mental illness.
After all, they aren’t mentally ill - they are just differently brained.
Most of them are too old anyway.
These women?
Good! Get with it ASAP. Sign up everybody for the draft and make them all subject to combat. Sasha and Malia too. Equality for all!
Equality all around no matter what, no exceptions.
Let’s see how all the feminists feel when they see their daughters brains and guts splattered all over the rocks. Let’s at least have them learn how to have diarrhea and mess in a mortar shell container in a ditch with bullets going over head. What about cleaning themselves when they have their period? How about a week in the field without a shower and with dysentery and a really raw red crotch? That is real equality. Bring it on.
A few barbies in wheel chairs and competing in the handicap olympics should do. How about brain damage? You know, that pitiful commercial where the little boy reads to and helps his father around the house?
Yes, I’m being crude, rude and inconsiderate because I’m sick of this stupidity. Time to go whole hog and reap the whirlwind. The liberal morons have sown the wind. Reality and equality is what they want so let’s get with it full up. Full scale and quit playing footsie with it.
What I really want to see what some father and mother do to some hairy armpit feminist when their beautiful, gentle, quiet, long haired daughters are drafted. Talk about brain and guts on the rocks! Bring it.
And why should their enlistment not be extended? It is for the men when they have problems isn’t it? I know the enlistment is extended for pilots if their training does not fall perfectly and they have casual time.
Equality for all in all respects.
Seems like getting pregnant is a self inflicted “disability” isn’t it? What about the morals clause. Sure would be good evidence.
I’m only being half cheeky.
They all look like ammo carriers to me.
No nation has ever kept the notion of arming and deploying females on front-line battles for very long. No matter how various TV action dramas and apocalyptic movies may depict the near-superhuman capabilities of females, real life is just not like that. Females bleed and die just like the men in combat situations, and they cannot carry nearly as much in the way of armaments or personal protection.
If it comes to all-out, fight-to-the-last-person, no-surrender confrontations, then the female contingent may help the male contingent survive just a little longer, but they still become noble sacrifices.
Drafting females is simply not an option for any society that wants to remain viable. The females are the mothers of the next generation of warriors.
If there is to be a next generation.
Miss Levar Burton looks pretty tough...
The Army’s having recruiting problems.
Stand for what’s right, and get screwed.
Women want equal treatment? Then they can be cannon fodder just like all of the men. My sons and me had to sign up for selective service, women can too.
Be careful what you wish for.
Tack drafting women onto the equal pay for (un)equal work bill and see how it goes.
Registration? Ha. You could register 5 year olds.
Wow. How do you really feel?
True. . .but enforce the current understanding of the 14th Amendment and make women register for the draft. . .that will raise quite a few female eyebrows and concerns.
As an adjunct, I teach federal government and most females in class are hard-core I-am-woman-hear-me-roar feminist equality types in everything. . .except for registering for the draft.
