True story. A company for whom I used to work in Japan was rivals to Disney. When Jim Henson passed, I proposed that we contact his widow and make a pitch for the Muppets. My bosses wanted the property, but felt my timing would be considered tacky.

Disney swept them up not long afterward. We probably couldn't have gotten them anyway because Disney would've outbid us. But I've often wondered what might have been.

Jim Henson had been in negotiations for quite some time with Disney. Henson’s untimely death simply put everything onto the back burner, but the Disney agreement was already laid out for the most part. So, the Japanese didn’t miss out on anything.
