Putin is a devout Christian, believe it or not. Compare his policy on gays with the west (source). Compare his putting up Vladimir the Great, holding a huge cross, next to the Kremlin as a testimony to Russia's Christian heritage vs. our tearing down the Ten Commandments (source). Consider what he says and does and tell me if this sounds more like someone who wishes to return to atheistic communism or a Nebuchadnezzar of our time.

I do believe he misses the days of Soviet dominance from a nationalistic standpoint, but I see him returning to that as White Russia rather than Red Russia. Their nation is primed for divine blessing.

I guess all those folks he’s had murdered and assassinated over the years for speaking out against him makes him a great Christian. Who knew thats all it takes to be a devout Christian.

That was perhaps some of the worst analysis of Putin that I have seen......anywhere.

Putin is a repressive totalitarian who has fairly rapidly eroded almost any chance for the Russian people to enjoy even a shred of the political freedoms we enjoy in the West. Period.

Old communist regimes used to repress homosexuals far more than we ever did, did that make those communist regimes any better?

He misses the days of Soviet empire, he wants to rebuild it. It was an evil empire before, and it wouldn't be much less evil under Putin's vision.

The idea that Russia is primed for divine blessing is.......well, it's just sad to see someone here actually believe that.

Putin is not likely trying to create a new Soviet Union, he probably views China as a better model. Authoritarian government combined with some free market economics. He will try to walk the same line the Chinese do. Offer enough economic freedom to keep the country growing or afloat, and none of those pesky political/personal freedoms that might allow people to express dissatisfaction with his rule.
