Doesn't there need to be competition to begin with? Who are the domestic TV manufacturers? Computer manufacturers? Clothing manufacturers? Toy manufacturers?

In the eighties Apple Computer manufactured in the US. So did Atari. Up through the seventies there was a healthy US based consumer electronics industry. Remember Texas Instruments with their calculators and digital watches? Toys were also manufactured in the US then.

What changed? Tariffs were all but eliminated and patriotism was disparaged by the MBA financialized culture created by the same educational institutions that were undermining every other aspect of American civilization.

None dare call it treason.

it’s like I said

and....

What the founding fathers did with respect to trade has no bearing on the improved trade situation of today. To regress to sailing ships and a tariff based government economy is foolish

You sound like a liberal dismissing what the founding fathers said about firearms.

"That was then, this is now."

Delusion doesn’t change the fact.

We don’t transport goods by sailing ships and yankee traders are in business all over the globe.

Your analogy is false, a crude attempt at a fig leaf

It's your argument. Things have changed since 1789 therefore the beliefs of the founding fathers are no longer relevant. That's exactly the argument liberals use against the Second Amendment. You're just using it to attack the founders on trade, not firearms. But it's the same kind of fallacious reasoning.

These days, the dollars come back in the form of foreign purchases of U.S. Treasury bills

Which is exactly why the federal beast does nothing about the growing trade deficit and loss of private sector jobs. There has got to be a better solution than giving the beast tariff income paid for by American consumers. Quotas are probably worse because they would cause shortages that lead to higher prices going into the pockets of foreign manufacturers. There has got to be some way to balance trade without creating windfalls for the wrong people.
