The death of a top Iranian military commander in Syria this week has dealt a "psychological blow" to elements backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to a U.S. intelligence official.
The killing of a commander in the Revolutionary Guards Corps at the hands of ISIS also highlights the extent of Iranian involvement in Syria and the dire straits in which Assad finds himself, Washington-based analysts say.
Brig. Gen. Hossein Hamedani was killed outside Aleppo, Syria, where he was advising the Syrian army in its fight against extremists, Iranian state media reported Friday.
Iranian media carried messages of condolence from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who described Hamedani's death as a big loss and applauded the senior commander for his bravery.
"He was in charge of [Iranian] operations inside Syria," said former CIA officer Reuel Marc Gerecht. "He's been involved in this from A to Z, so in the short term, it's probably a fairly significant loss."
The current U.S. intelligence official said the general's death would be a setback for fighters supporting the government.

It’s too bad all of them (the Russians, Assad, ISIS, al Qaeda, Hezbollah, etc.) cannot lose.
One could theorize the opposite over the death of a general at the front lines. The morale of the fighting men may be enhanced by the knowledge that their leadership is down in the front lines, sharing the hardships of their men. The writer never considers that morale maybe negatively affected by generals who never show up where the bullets are flying and are comfortably sitting in their air conditioned headquarters.
However the details of his death are murky with all kinds of rumor about who got to,him and how
The KGB and IRGC will take suitable action
No doubt there are capable military leaders to replace him
And the bad news is what?
It sure sounds like the US is backing ISIS, and even cheer leading for it.

I remember the days when the US delivered massive psychological blows to our enemies, now ISIS does it.
So ISIS has enough access to place a bomb on a car the General uses? Must have bombed it from the street.
It does bring up a lot of questions alright.
On the Hugh Hewitt show, they said hitting Hamedani is similar to if our Joint Chief of Staffs were taken out. It was a big hit and yes, these things are demoralizing.
