Opting to save Kuwait from Iraq was a regrettable brain fart on Poppy Bush's part.
A better strategy would have been to have given Saddam to understand that, as long as he stayed away from the Bomb, and US gas prices stayed reasonable, he could do what he pleases with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Remember, Saddam was just a dictator. He was not religious — his foreign minister was Christian!
Saddam ruling over the Middle East, the religious police having been fed through wood chippers, and the Royal Family exiled or worse, would, of course, have been a bad an excellent outcome. The death of a worthless ally!
