Common Core standards a 'misguided quest to reinvent the mathematical wheel

Money section get to the mind early...

in schools...

As the proud parent of two elementary school-aged children, I am extremely concerned about my children being used as guinea pigs in the Department of Education's misguided quest to reinvent the mathematical wheel.

A spokeswoman for the department, Jessica Hickernell, was quoted as saying, "It's a transition, so it takes awhile." While "awhile" may seem perfectly acceptable to Ms. Hickernell and the Department of Education, I could not disagree more as I recognize the elementary years as, unarguably, the most influential ones in shaping their entire educational future.

In 90 seconds this white guilt sufferer tells the world WHY he assisted in developing insane common core.

Using the euphemistic phrase “white privilege”, he admits that to bring the UNPRIVILEGED” student (read that “minority inner-city kid who may come from a single parent home and a mother who cannot or will not work with the kid to get him up to speed for school) to some kind of parity with the “WHITE PRIVILEGE” student (from a two parent home where his folks value education and grasp that it is essential for their child’s success in life and PREPARE the child for school) THE WHITE “PRIVILEGED” kid needs to be brought DOWN TO THE LEVEL OF THE “UNPRIVILEGED” kid.

The expression popular before PC took hold was “DUMBED DOWN”!

Let that sink in and you may understand why Trump — and anyone with a brain who wants America to compete with the rest of the world — wants common core tossed on the huge and growing pile of cockamamie, nonsensical failed “progressive” leftist ideas.

From the crowd reaction, most of them don’t want this screwball stuff shoved down their throats either.

Unfortunately kids need to be tracked in math. Some need to learn how to get by and others would benefit from learning the the deeper underpinnings of a new language. Common Core apparently does neither and poorly at that.

Personally I think Commie Core is a teaching method that programs students how the think the way the givernment tells them to.

It is more than misguided math. Also, revisionist history, no classical literature, etc, etc

I think that it might be a purposeful plan to confuse students so they do not learn the correct manner.

A link to the curriculum of Common Core teaching Pre-K how to count using their fingers.

They start with the pinky for one, and then the pinky and ring finger for two, and so on.

Great way to destroy modern civilization in one generation as a whole generation of public school kids will grow up to be functionally illiterate.

Judging by the opposition of unionized teachers to Common Core, I’m in no rush to condemn it. While I’ve seen outrageous examples of what it taught, as a parent I understand it is replacing a system that teaches almost nothing. To me the most important thing is that it seems to provide an evaluation process that is completely lacking now; every parent is told their child is a great student and realizes the hard way that in fact many children aren’t being educated very much in any subject. My children have tales of receiving better grades for participating in canned food drives, and one says his teacher openly told them their grade was dependent solely on classroom behavior (as opposed to learning anything).

The current system is a joke, and I can’t believe ANYTHING isn’t an improvement.

Common core math is a hideous joke. Very few kids in elementary school today will be capable of doing advanced mathematics when they get to college - thus will be the need to import more engineers and scientists. You’d almost think it was designed to destroy this nation’s technical abilities.....

This reminds me of when my kids were small. The entire education system decided phonics was stupid and went to sight reading aka memorizing words. Don’t know how long it lasted as we were lucky enough to get old-school teachers during the assault. Also, had been teaching phonics at home.

At any rate, by the time they came to their senses, thousands of kids had been pushed through who couldn’t really read, my nephew among them. Very sad.

It IS worse.

Check out the link in post 10 and see how they are trying to teach kids to count on their fingers today.

I see; are they doing this because so many children today need calculators for the most basic math problems?

Each day my husband or I picks up our two youngest grandchildren from school and bring them here. I work with them on their homework until Mom or Dad gets here after work. I can’t help the 5th grader much with his math. Fortunately he is able to do his work fairly well, but it still seems like a long way to get a simple answer. The little one is 6, 1st grade, has several homework and ongoing assignments to do after school each day. Most of the kids when I was in grade school liked to stay for After School playground where we had fun and got exercise. My two guys come in the house and sort through their enormous backpacks for their paperwork. The little one’s math is not bad, but his spelling activities leave a lot to be desired. Thursday, he had to write all of his spelling words backward. His dad commented “what are they trying to do, make him dyslexic?
Thankfully they did not make him write the actual letters backward, just the words. There are many activities to choose from each day, including cutting out each letter of their spelling words from magazines to paste on a paper to make the words. He would rather study the words and write them normally and have me quiz him. I’m going to the parent-teacher conferences Monday with my daughter-in-law, and will have a few questions for each teacher. Not at all impressed with Common Core, let each district decide what they want.
