Obama Administration Bans All Pork Products From Prison Menus

The federal Bureau of Prisons, a subdivision of President Barack Obama's Justice Department, has banished all pork products from the menus in all federal prisons ...

The government says it made the decision to do this because a survey showed that inmates do not like eating pork products.

The Council on American-Islamic relations said “we welcome” the move by the government to deny pork to prisoners, but warned that it might spark “Islamophobia.”

“The National Pork Producers Council isn’t buying it. 'I find it hard to believe that a survey would have found a majority of any population saying, ‘No thanks, I don’t want any bacon,'” said Dave Warner, a spokesman for the Washington-based trade association, which represents the nation’s hog farmers.

CAIR told the Post that banning pork in federal prisons would accommodate Muslim prisoners:

Ohio Pork Producers Fight To Keep Pork On Prison Menus  Wednesday October 5, 2011 7:07 PM UPDATED: Wednesday October 5, 2011 9:55 PM COLUMBUS, Ohio - Pork producers in Ohio fought the decision to take pork off prison menus on Wednesday. A federal civil lawsuit brought by Abdul Awakal, who is on death row at the Mansfield Correctional Facility, claimed that by denying him his Halal (which means lawlful in Arabic) meal his religious rights were violated, 10TV’s Kevin Landers reported. Muslims who follow Halal rules only eat meat that has been slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law and refrain from eating pork entirely. A second inmate, Cornelius Causey, joined the lawsuit saying the vegetarian and non-pork options the prison provides are not good enough, Landers reported. In response to the increased intensity of the lawsuit, pork was completely eliminated from the menu on Oct. 1. Dick Isler, Vice President of Ohio Pork Producers Council said this worries pork producers. “The Ohio pork producers are very concerned about this.” said Isler, “We’re going to look at how we can get pork back on the menu.” The state of Ohio spends between $3.50 to $7.00 for kosher meals compared to $1.70 on regular meals, Landers reported.
