WASHINGTON Representative Kevin McCarthy on Thursday abruptly took himself out of the race to succeed John A. Boehner as speaker, apparently undone by the same forces that drove Mr. Boehner to resign.

Fast-forward 15 years, and we now have the spectacle of House GOP leadership canceling an election they could not rig.

Likely he is a spotlight, “everyone has to focus on me and like me” kind of guy; when he didn’t see that, it bruised his ego so he dropped out. Just a guess.
I have a feeling that GotNews will publish the story by this weekend anyway.
None-the-less....good riddance. I heard him on the radio last week talking about "Cooperation with the Democrats" ... 'great', sez me, 'another Republican squish'.....
The caucus is ungovernable. About half of the Members are RINOs and about half are conservative or serve a conservative district.
They can’t be led until the two groups agree to compromise with each- and the RINOs won’t. They want what they used to have under Boehner though he can’t deliver that anymore and neither can anyone else.
There won’t be a new Speaker until they do compromise- unless they ally with the Dems. Which is nearly unthinkable.
So, in effect, there is no Speaker race at this time to run in!
Allen West.
Sarah Palin.
Newt?

Otherwise ........ not so much. I'm hoping that someone will step up in the primary. It's a very conservative district, there'd be some good people to come out of it.
Paul Ryan?
Yes—If McCarthy had to have an affair, Ellmers was a better choice than Clay Aiken. Things could be worse.
I think it is a good thing.
No, with Newt, it will be "Let's make him veto it, then we'll run on it."
I like the way West thinks. I don’t want a mouse.
yes we did!!!!!!!!!!!
Labrador would drive them crazy. Effective, conservative, and Latino.

This is why the ‘cease & desist’ letter was sent. I think McCarthy finally realized there would be consequences due to the Jones letter:
Rep. Jones calls for candidates with ‘misdeeds’ to withdraw from leadership race

Now, there would ba a nice pick! Shake things up!

I’ve seen worse, and I’ll leave it at that.
The Speaker doesn’t have to be a member of Congress.
You are right.
This makes some interesting possibilities.;
Chaffetz is better than McCarthy, but that’s about all you can say for him.
