A Marine Says: If a Shooter Shows Up, Don't Be a Victim, Attack
Radix News ^ | 10/6/2015 | Coleman Jennings

Have you ever asked yourself what you would do if you encountered a crazed shooter at your school, workplace, or a public space? Your actions in that moment could save your life, and those of others....

Let’s focus on Fight. This is the one I’ve considered for 15 years. And has been heightened by my time in the Marines. When there is no escape, you MUST fight. Charge the attacker. Throw a water bottle, binder, book, coffee, chair, desk, back pack, anything, to throw them off. Then charge them.

I’ve literally run toward the fire in a burning building.

A few years ago, there was a gas leak in the lab of the company I worked for. As everyone was evacuating, I ran toward the leak, found it and shut of the gas. Later on, I went to the store and got some yellow Teflon tape and fixed the pipe. It was at a large corporation but since nobody told me not to, I did.

After that, depending on the weight, pick up or crouch down behind an office chair (one on wheels) to charge the shooter. The chair might stop a bullet from hitting your head or torso.

When my son had become a Marine (reservist) but before he was fully trained and deployed, there was an incident near his apartment in downtown Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth U. Gunfire in the wee hours of the morning.

He and his roommate ((Army reservist, later at Mosul, Iraq during the tent bombing) jumped up and went outside and ran in the direction of the gunfire. Turned out to be a couple local scum shooting their 9mm’s at each other.

Though ill-advised, they did not fear for themselves. Both those boys fought well in Iraq, though my son didn’t make it back alive.

It would seem that anyone would know this, but Common Sense has become a superpower in the last 5 or 10 years since so few seem to possess it anymore.

Don't just fight back, Shoot back!

No more GUN FREE ZONES!

The blood of everyone who has been shot in Gun Free Zones is on the hands of the anti-gun nuts that want people unable to defend themselves.

If only, the gun control pushers would all find themselves in situations where someone was shooting at them and they had to wait 20 minutes for the police to show up.

I wonder how many of them possess the imagination to wish that they had a gun to shoot back with.

...or would they just wet their pants thinking “Guns are scary!”

Always remember the 21 foot rule.

I think cops are taught this in their training, not sure, not a cop.

Anyway, inside of 21 feet, an attacker can charge and make contact before the attackee has time to react. If he is already aiming and fixing to fire, it may be too late, but what do you have to lose?

Military training, contact sports, martial arts, etc all help. Any plan of action is better than no plan.

For me, some military training combined with 9 years of intense contact sports helped in my reaction/inaction instincts, but working livestock for 15 years , often alone. is what taught me how to confront a dangerous situation with little hesitation.

My understanding is the “momma bear” instinct some mothers have allow them to punch way above their weight class, and overcome situations where they are heavily outmatched.

Having taken hits and been knocked unconscious in the past he[p to show you that it isn’t that bad, often not even felt in the heat of it.

Don’t run up to the threat, run through and over it. This mindset helps as well, but takes some learning/conditioning.

That said, what would I do if trapped by a shooter? I do not know. I have only been shot at once and it made me mad, not scared.

“If you don’t have it naturally you need to have it trained into you, either through military training or martial arts/self defence training.”

On target. The first reaction is not fight or flee; it’s freeze. You have to train yourself to react.

That’s what I didn’t understand in Oregon. They stood there as he shot them one at a time. Whatever happened to “Let’s roll”? Do you not want to go down fighting? Do something. Anything. But don’t just stand there and take it.

Americans fight.

We don’t cry or beg or run.

And we don’t use baseball bats, golf clubs or fireplace pokers.

We use guns.

Got it, Barry? Good. Now STFU and stop making helpless victims out of students.

We aren’t going to support your agenda no matter how many of them you get killed.

If five students picked up their desks and charged the shooter, it's very unlikely the shooter would be able to get them all. For one thing, the desks might deflect some of the bullets.

Certainly if a few charge and a few throw desks, the chances that the shooter could harm more than a few students are lessened considerably.

If a few students are throwing chairs, the shooter might duck one and get some shots off, but he probably won't be able dodge every one. Cowering in the corner will mean easy pickings for the shooter.

To WRENCH according to my tactics knife instructor, in 2009 the FBI pushed that distance out to 31 feet. Look up Nicaraguan machete attack video for a brutal demonstration of a knife in a gun fight. And I practice Mozambique drills at 3.5m and 5.5m.

“according to my tactics knife instructor, in 2009 the FBI pushed that distance out to 31 feet. “

Even better odds for those that fight back, even with just their fists.
