He's probably had this problem for quite some time yet waited until the playoffs to do something about it?

I’m guessing the Yankees told him he wouldn’t pitch much in the playoffs, or were even leaving him off the roster.

Doing now probably means he realizes how urgent it is to get help. When someone is ready to get sober he should not delay for any reason. I wish him well and will pray for him.

Couldn't be that urgent - he's been lousy for two years (assuming his pitching problems are alcohol related).

Great News! ...hope he gets the help he needs.
I'm sure John Boehner can recommend something.

C C was involved in a fight at some Toronto nightclub this summer when the Yankees were in town.
Now it makes a lot more sense.

Thirty-five years old puts him on the downhill side. His fastball is in decline. Some players do age faster than others. He’s the worst Yankees starter except maybe for prospect Nova, who has a big upside.
‘Alcohol rehab’ is sometimes used to cover up drug rehab as well.

I’m a Red Sox gal, so it’s extremely rare for me to have a kind word for a Yankee!
In this case, however, an exception must be made. When an alcoholic asks for help, there is no good reason to wait or put it off.
May this man go with God and find his way to recover. If he’s done with the madness, he can have a wonderful sober life.

Fat Boy “ I didn’t know alcohol had calories” Much, much more to this story than this rehab BS.

Perhaps putting himself into rehab freezes him on the roster??

When your living room features its own bar, could that be a sign?
Seriously, I would love to have a "man cave" like this.

He’s signed for two more years, roster or not. He will not be on the 25-man roster.

From the article....
Sabathia is well thought of in the game and his decision sent shockwaves through the baseball community. The hefty lefty made news earlier in the season when he had to be restrained in an early-morning melee outside a Toronto nightclub. Sabathia said at the time that the heckler caught him at a bad time.
At the time, Sabathia defended his lifestyle and said the most difficult part of the situation was explaining the headlines to his 12-year-old son.
Thats the toughest part: Dad had a bad night. Made a bad decision. Sometimes these things happen, Sabathia said.
In a separate incident this summer, Sabathia was photographed smoking on a hotel balcony, but said it was a cigar and refused to pay off the shutterbug.
Well wishes, for his recovery...and for his family.

I've kept him on my roto team. He's so frustrating. His BB/K ratios are still very good. And he'll pitch a gem once in awhile. He's got a 5.18 @ Yankee Stadium, so that doesn't help. But, he should still be doing better. Maybe this is part of the problem.
He seems like a real good guy. His Dad was a junkie.
