Why did missing cargo ship sail straight INTO Hurricane Joaquin?

The wife of one of missing cargo ship El Faro’s crewmembers has demanded to know why the beleaguered vessel set sail and why it did not re-route out of the path of Hurricane Joaquin.

The photos of the young crew members are especially sad to me as they show them in their maritime academy uniforms and my son went through Cal Maritime. He sailed on the sister ship,the Greatland, of El Faro, which used to be the Northland, on the Oakland to Hawaii run.

there are known ways to try to (try to) out run hurricanes in sail boats. depending on where you are in relation to it. fastest point of sail in a modern sloop rig is beam reach. just rethinking this at the north of it you are heading east and south. south of it east and north. mostly east as any wind can carry you.

Once the freighter is loaded, is it safer at sea than in port if a hurricane hits (engines operating)?

Doesn’t The Navy usually sends their ships out if a hurricane approaches ?

yes depends on the port. this is not 1800’s. then you go around the hurricane not into it. see my other post on sail boats known avoidance directions. if not stuck somewhere due east of North Carolina now where it should have been heading after setting out. this course of seamanship is as fishy as the smell of obamah’s underwear. death by suicide choice hurricane.

The debris field was the second found on Sunday. Earlier in the day, "multiple items" were seen in the water just before noon. Those items included containers, loose deck materials and oil sheen, crew members told WMTW-TV in Maine. Saturday night the Coast Guard recovered an orange life preserver Saturday belonging to the 735-foot-long ship.
