The rose could be the pope, depending on the context. It can also refer to an idea, ideal, or whatever.

What I'm saying is that the radical left has been giddily enamored by this pope, thinking he was one of their own in every respect, but when a contrary action or word emerges, at least from their own viewpoint, they suddenly turn on him as a "traitor."

As with most “progressive” movements, and especially communist/socialist movements, there is a thing called “party discipline”. One does not break party discipline. That is, the General Secretary or central committee or leaders or cult head set the tone and rules by which party/movement members conduct themselves and what party lines are to be adhered to. If the media or others suddenly start attacking Francis, it is because they believe he has broken party discipline. You either toe the line; organize a faction within the movement; prepare to be expelled or sent to the gulags.
