And that question should go out to Songbird McCain, since he’s been salivating for a major conflict in Syria for some time now.
For the same reason it was "so important" to take out Ghadaffi in Libya. Obama wants the gates to power for islamist radicals thrown open. He got his wish in Libya as ISIS has gained a foothold there, but the Russians have laid down a marker in Syria and aren't letting him f*** with Assad any further.
