I'm now building a time line of Draft Laws and cross indexing with Bernie's sketch biographic information. It appears to me that he was eligible for the draft and unshielded from deferments from at least Aug 0f 1965 (when the married deferrmnent was ended) until he turned 27 in Sept of 1968. It looks like he went from "student" to "married". A cynic might wonder how legit the marriage was, especially given that he was running in far-left circles at Univ. of Chicago.

The marriage, regardless of why it was begun did not last long. It ended in divorce two years later, and did not produce any children (although Bernie for many years failed to correct a common misconception that his son, Levi, born in 1969, was from his first marriage. In fact Levi Noah was born out of wedlock. Perhaps a stigma still attached to this fact 30 years ago when Bernie began his political career.
