The roller-coaster rise and fall of Trey Gowdy for House majority leader

A sudden swell of enthusiasm for Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) to make a late-entry bid into the race for House majority leader faded almost as quickly as it began.

After being talked up by allies on Tuesday, Gowdy, who chairs the House Select Committee on Benghazi, decided against running for the House GOP’s No. 2 post before his possible campaign could gain momentum among his colleagues.

“I’m not running. I’m staying on the Benghazi committee,” Gowdy said in an interview off the House floor before votes at 3:55 p.m. “One hundred percent I am staying on the Benghazi committee.”

Gowdy denied that he was ever really close to becoming a candidate for one of the House’s top jobs. “Not really. Have I ever run for a leadership position? I’ve never run for one…. I am staying on the Benghazi committee. Period. Exclamation point.”

He has accomplished exactly zip in the Benghazi committee. When he is drafted into a position where he might accomplish something and possibly save the country, he refuses to serve. Yes, he is a coward.

“It simply amazes me how so-called conservatives here at FR can turn on their best allies in congressso quickly. They are infants.”

More than likely they are paid Clinton/Obama/dem shills trying to create doubt in peoples minds.

I've not been pleased with every single Gowdy III House vote or missed vote. But if you interpret what is happening (or in your narrow view, NOT happening) regarding the prosecution of Hitlery Clinton and others involved in Benghazi as cowardice and lack of successful work on Gowdy's part, you are not seeing what other FReepers are seeing: A possible and very real path to de-railing and shutting down the Clinton machine...forever.

You sound like a know-it-all high school coach for the team destined to lose because of over-coaching and ego; the kind I like to coach against.

What I’ve been able to pick up from little snippets in the news so far, Gowdy has gone past Benghazi.

It appear he’s gone into Rathergate and what led up to it and now he is into the Clintons original “spontaneous” lie which comes from the 1st WTC bombing in 1993.

Some of these numbnuts actually believe Gowdy should keep them up on what he’s doing.

It’s turbulent times. He probably sees the leadership posts as dead ends at this point due to both sides intransigence.

He’s a finisher. He wants to finish the Benghazi investigation and he’s been like a well behaved prosecutor. Not leaking salacious details but standing firm, silent and resolute on getting the truth.

This is why the Clinton’s have been having a hard time finding successful means to undermine him.

Are you saying this kind doesn’t ever really bite and hurt ya?

If so, you are mistaken. I know.

He does not speak espanolee or live in the S Texas Valley.

I am represented by one of the worst demonrats in the Texas district of the Valley but it does not prevent me calling it as I see it.

He’s had 17 months, since May, 2014. Results talk, BS walks, or at least that’s the way we `dumb-as-rocks, wacko, Hobbit garbage’ think.

If he waits to `spring’ until the Clinton machine steals the election, then he’s just been all along what he appears to be now: a useless Gop-e tit marking time, playing it safe.

Or is this a Gop-e variation on, “Just give us the WH and oh, the things we’ll do!” Do something or get off the pot, Treyvonn.

I just one one of these constitutional scholars to explain what they expect Gowdy to do when the democrats still have full control of the AG and justice department.

I’m starting to think a civics quiz should be required to vote but it would unfortunately wipe out as much of the conservative vote as the liberal vote.

Pretty dang sure.

He speaks cameraoskee and double speak.

Let’s say this. Now that Boner is gone and if we put a real leader in charge of the House, will Gowdy do anything?

My hope he would. At first, I was enthralled by Gowdy’s speeches (kinda like Trump’s) but as time wore on he was just another chest thumper looking for a camera.

He is not the leader I thought he was. He was just in Boehners shadow protecting his committee appointment.

Now he is fighting to keep that appointment with Boehner gone. You can bet he is wheeling and dealing. Just like the other GOPrats on the Boehner sinking ship.

So Boehner being out as speaker somehow magically gives us control of the Attorney General and Justice department? After all, they are the ones who will have to prosecute.

Children who want what they want despite reality have an excuse.

This is what I thought Gowdy should do, stay on the investigation. He’s been stonewalled at every turn by the Obama administration, and won’t get much actually done while Obama is in office, his DOJ will do nothing and Gowdy knows it.

But those who think he’s just another establishment yes man are wrong. And we don’t know just how far along he really is, he’s been pretty quiet about things so far.

As long as Obama is still in office, indictment will happen, but if Gowdy keeps going, he’s uncovering more and more all the time that may derail Hillary as a candidate. we know a lot more now than we did before it started. Server, devices she used, Blumenthal, missing chunks of emails, lie after lie...

He’s making progress but it’s very slow. State department took ages to release anything at all, even after subpoenas, Hillary tried to delete everything she could and didn’t turn over a thing until it came out in the news she had the server, and tried to wipe it after she got a subpoena, he’s hit brick wall after brick wall. And still making progress, and we don’t really know just how much more hasn’t been released...

Leave him alone and let him do his job, he’s an excellent prosecutor, playing his hand close to the chest, and don’t forget he still gets to question Hillary later this month. She’ll do nothing but lie of course, we can always hope she will plead the 5th and make it obvious she’s guilty as hell, but I doubt that will happen.

I think he needs to stay right where he is, doing what he does best.

Another thread says Gowdy has now announced he is not even running re-election. As much as I like they guy, I think the GOPe must have dug up some damaging material as a result of his being mentioned for speaker.

All he really can do at this point is keep it going till there is new management in the Justice department. The fact that these investigations are still ongoing is encouraging because they won’t become old news for the next administration to let slide.

Its why the democrats consistently cry that the investigations are a waste of time. They want the urgency to fade before someone interested in justice actually has control.

Don't think that's it.

Whatever someone(s) may have on Gowdy III is nowhere near as incriminating (if anything valid at all) as he has on prominent others from his far-reaching and expansive "Benghazi" investigations which have continued taking place away from the public hearings and prying noses of the media.

I think he is going to have a government job for which he is well-suited by interest and ability in a higher authoritative position in the months and years that may come. But it's my guess and that's all.

You should work for McConnell.

He gives in before the fight starts too.

Oh, or Boehner he was known for the same.

Or ‘what does it matter’, Gowdy is going to ‘wrap things up’ and go back to Georgia.

So tell me what magical plan do you have for the Obama Justice department to try and convict Clinton?

Are you too much of a coward to answer?
