The Senate voted 77-19 Monday to advance a short-term government spending bill, narrowing the chances of a federal shutdown days before Wednesdays deadline.
The Senates continuing resolution leaves intact taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood, shelving a fight that conservatives wanted Republican leadership to wage with President Barack Obama. Planned Parenthood, Americas largest abortion provider, is under scrutiny following a series of undercover videos.
With the Senates vote Monday, Congress now has two days to finalize a spending agreement for Obama to avoid a shutdown.
The spending measure, which funds the government through Dec. 11, is likely to sail through the Senate on final passage Tuesday. It still must be approved by the Republican-led House. The White House has indicated that Obama would sign the clean resolution.
Conservatives criticized the Senates vote as a missed opportunity to take action against Planned Parenthood.
Mitch McConnell is protecting government funding for an organization that has been accused of manipulating abortion procedures to secure higher prices for the sale of baby parts from aborted children, said Russ Vought, vice president of grassroots outreach for Heritage Action, in an email to conservative activists.
House Speaker John Boehner, who announced his resignation Friday, was asked about a potential shutdown on CBS Face the Nation Sunday. Boehner vowed that the chamber would take up the Senates bill despite heated Republican division over its inclusion of federal funds for Planned Parenthood.
Boehner, who shocked his colleagues last week upon announcing he was stepping down in October, added that he would pursue an investigation into Planned Parenthood following the string of undercover videos showing top officials from the group discussing the sale of aborted babies.
We will also take up a select committee to investigate these horrific videos that we have seen from abortion clinics in several states that really raise questions about the use of federal funds and raise questions about aborted fetuses that are born alive, he said.
Last week, Senate Democrats blocked a continuing resolution that would have stripped the organization of its $500 million in federal grants. Eight Republican senators split with their party to vote against the measure, leaving the legislation short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster and advance.
Though Congress will likely avert a government shutdown this week, the fight over funding for Planned Parenthood is likely only delayed until mid-December as House and Senate Republicans have promised to reignite the defund effort.
Why don’t these chicken $%^t RINOs just send a defund Planned Parenthood bill to the imposter and make him veto it. Better yet use the “nuke option” just like the RATS did to get their judges approved. The nuke option would involve a simple majority vote. The GOP cowardice is revolting.
IMO, if the Opeaser were to veto and shut down the Fedgov over defunding PP, than let him do it. Pretty sure, that most of the Country is sickened by what their tax dollars are doing to human beings is this sick market for baby parts.
Pretty sure Opeaser would own this one. But, the House RINO's just don't have the cojones for ANY fight anymore. Any wonder cry-baby RINO Boehner resigned? He was challenged by Constitutional conservatives and folded like a cheap suit.
The House should move the CR forward without PP funding. Let Obama go on record as supporting the baby parts industry. A no-win for Opeaser; a win for the House conservatives. If the House PR people make a compelling case in the media, bet Opeaser will fold.
If there's ever been a case for defunding something, it is this.
If this keeps up, we will both enter the Forbes 400 by Jan 2017.
It originated in the Senate that gets to forward their own bills, but only the House bills authorizes funding even if the concurrent bills are similar. Then both have to go through a reconcile process.
The above is why few if any House Bills got through under Harry Reid's tyranny and his change of Senate rules. The new Republican House would send bills to the Democrat Senate and Reid would bottle them up in committee and not allow a floor vote or require a super-majority for some floor votes. He moved the goal post as he saw fit.
That's why we are so pissed after gaining the Senate and controlling the House while McConnell and Boehner plays nicey nice. Those two pathetic RINO's just won't play hard ball like Reid and earlier Pelosy did.
The anger, distrust, and disgust from the above is why Boehner resigned. He can say whatever, he knew the conservatives are gaining strength. Now if only McTurtleface will get a clue...
Yea but I hear people like us are wrong, idiots, morons and don’t know anything. I hear it a lot. But we keep being right every time.
I wonder how that works...Yup. A mystery.
Therein lies much of the problem. The Senate has its own set of rules that can be changed at any time. Harry Reid ran roughshod over the Senate by going "nuclear" as it was called - 51% to further Democrat agenda with no 60% filibuster rule. Plus, he rarely let a committee vote for a floor vote. He is a tyrant.
The go-along to get-along McConnell who now runs the Senate has not even threatened to do the same. He has stated he prefers the old rules where RINO's get hammered every time. I often wonder who and in what lock box is holding the RINO's testicles. Is it in the same warehouse in the scene of "Indian Jones" where they lock away the "Covenant of the Ark"?
I noticed a large number of posters recently, boosting the various GOPe candidates. They are right on time. CoC shills, and Rove plants. It is our duty to ruin their days : )
Yea but it’s a pleasant duty. More a recreational activity for me with a good outcome for all. It’s a dirty business sure. But ultimately I see it as a lesser evil ;)
That was a good one : )
A “necessary” evil.
Regardless, this thing is a huge problem for PP and you wouldn't know it by listening to the media or by Cecile herself. They are in the fight for their lives.
I was told by a former abortion clinic owner that just having a couple of people outside the clinic praying while facing the clinic turns the entire clinic into one frenzied mess. So, you can imagine what all these videos are doing to PP.
But, they are counting on Congress to play along and give them even more money, when this would be the best time to squash them like the vermin they really are.
If they are given 500 million, then we should apologize to every Nazi we put to death at Nuremberg.
Oh God don’t give them any ideas. I can see that one replacing lesser evil easily. That way the transformation will be complete. So called conservatives openly advocating evil as necessary.
And you KNOW these “lesser evil” morons will do it.
Actually, the party itself is pro-life, however the deciders among the leadership are not. And the GOPe definitely is not.
The grassroots are the ones who form the party platform, which has become progressively more pro-life over the last 30 years.
We are in the majority.
We are the ones who put all those guys in Congress.
They should be listening to us.
Of course.
In the kingdom of the blind...
A party is it’s leaders. “WE” elected them.
That is what they would like you think.
Our Founders believed otherwise when they made "We the People" the purpose of action when they wrote our documents.
The leadership ignores the sovereign will of the people when they do their will rather than our will.
So, for the correction - The party is our party. We elected them.
They need to do our will.
The founders were seriously opposed to party politics.
And Democrats (official ones at least) did not elect Republicans. WE did.
Ted Cruz rather succinctly described the disconnect between the
Party and we “the hicks and rubes”. The Party is controlled by K street.
PP is one big, giant slush fund for political donations.
There is almost no outrage on FR for this slush fund aspect it seems to be ignored.
That is true, however they did try to mitigate as much ambition as they could.
Even during their days they had the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists, but when it came to the fundamentals they were all on the same page.
That is how we got our Founding documents with much less rancor than the French Revolution garnered.
