The Senate voted 77-19 Monday to advance a short-term government spending bill, narrowing the chances of a federal shutdown days before Wednesdays deadline.
The Senates continuing resolution leaves intact taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood, shelving a fight that conservatives wanted Republican leadership to wage with President Barack Obama. Planned Parenthood, Americas largest abortion provider, is under scrutiny following a series of undercover videos.
With the Senates vote Monday, Congress now has two days to finalize a spending agreement for Obama to avoid a shutdown.
The spending measure, which funds the government through Dec. 11, is likely to sail through the Senate on final passage Tuesday. It still must be approved by the Republican-led House. The White House has indicated that Obama would sign the clean resolution.
Conservatives criticized the Senates vote as a missed opportunity to take action against Planned Parenthood.
Mitch McConnell is protecting government funding for an organization that has been accused of manipulating abortion procedures to secure higher prices for the sale of baby parts from aborted children, said Russ Vought, vice president of grassroots outreach for Heritage Action, in an email to conservative activists.
House Speaker John Boehner, who announced his resignation Friday, was asked about a potential shutdown on CBS Face the Nation Sunday. Boehner vowed that the chamber would take up the Senates bill despite heated Republican division over its inclusion of federal funds for Planned Parenthood.
Boehner, who shocked his colleagues last week upon announcing he was stepping down in October, added that he would pursue an investigation into Planned Parenthood following the string of undercover videos showing top officials from the group discussing the sale of aborted babies.
We will also take up a select committee to investigate these horrific videos that we have seen from abortion clinics in several states that really raise questions about the use of federal funds and raise questions about aborted fetuses that are born alive, he said.
Last week, Senate Democrats blocked a continuing resolution that would have stripped the organization of its $500 million in federal grants. Eight Republican senators split with their party to vote against the measure, leaving the legislation short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster and advance.
Though Congress will likely avert a government shutdown this week, the fight over funding for Planned Parenthood is likely only delayed until mid-December as House and Senate Republicans have promised to reignite the defund effort.
INDIVIDUAL STATES: Effective IMMEDIATELY, Planned Parenthood is hereby forbidden to operate within the state and unconstitutional Obamacare is hereby null and void in the state.
STATES: DO IT!!!!
Remember this when you vote for Republican senators in 2016.
Ahem...
“34 feet, naked and golden, with scantily clad virginal elfen maidens fanning them with palm fronds”
I’m so sick of those weasels.
Shame on you, KY voters, for electing Mitch McConnell, financier of baby butchery, for the past three decades.
Prosecute ‘em. Bring charges in federal court, for violating federal law. Funding (or not) means little when everyone involved is incarcerated.
WHO???
It’s a lesser evil. This is what staunch right wing chest thumping ‘conservatives’ demanded isn’t it? Instead of being upset at the people that campaigned on working with Barry openly, anger should be directed at the ‘conservatives that browbeat so many people into electing them. Many of them are right here on FR so they’re not hard to find.
It is afterall, they that worked directly to get these guys elected and they who screamed bloody murder at anyone that refused to elect a batch of baby killers.
Setting aside the fact that murdering babies and selling their body parts is going on ...
PP is one big, giant slush fund for political donations.
Congress gives them money and PP gives it back to them in the form of donations during election years.
That is $500,000,000.00 for future campaign activity.
That is one huge lotto winning.
Each one the people supporting this bill will benefit later from their effort to payoff PP.
Republican ‘control’ of congress got us nothing. The Dems still run the show because Republicans are WEAK. They talk a lot but produce zero results. They use the word ‘compromise’ to rationalize weakness, failure, and betrayal.

What the eff is a “shutdown?” I would just like to see ONE leader put a stop to this. The MSM, de facto, has amended the Constitution so that Congress exercising its Power of the Purse is engaging in a “shutdown.” It has to stop and stop NOW. Without the power of the purse, what power and purpose exactly does Congress have? None.
But you see how readily and easily the MSM gets the GOPe Quislings to accept their narrative. From the get go, ole John Boner and Mitch are not engaged in fighting to preserve the separation of powers but busy apologizing and sniveling for MSM approval. Please like us, please, please, please. We promise to be good little sock puppets. Government shutdown, not on our watch!!! Those are those whacko birds who actually want to pretend in that Constitution thingy drafted by racists.
Boner and McConnell and the rest of the MSM wonder why we want them gone. The wonder as to the appeal of outsiders (perceived and actual) in the 2016 campaign. Good Lord.
How did this originate in the House as the Constitution demands?
Which is what some of us tried explaining for years.
They are a pressure relief valve. It’s the function they serve openly. Unfortunately too many still act like obamazombies and swear that they are not collaborating to get liberalism advanced.
I’ll guess. Miss Lindsey, McCain, Collins, Ayotte, Kirk, Flake, McConnell and Cornyn.
Interesting that if you got your news from Life News on twitter you would never know this happened. They seem quite defensive of the GOPe, IME.
Perhaps it is time we set our sights on those who are BUYING THE BABY PARTS?
Destroy the buyer, destroy the supplier by proxy as it were.
Just thinking out loud...the frustration can be overwhelmingly irritating.
Does it truly matter? It depends on where they are in the election cycle.
If it wasn’t these eight, it would have been eight others, or however many were needed to keep the progressive agenda moving forward.
Despite the rhetoric, the GOP is not a pro-life party.
