Because we have a political duopoly. The barriers to entry for a party at the national level are very, very high. So, there's only two choices in the political market. The GOPe has decided that it's not really necessary to please their voters.

Those within Speaker Boehner’s tight-knit circle will point to the “accomplishments” of the past nine months as reasons why he’ll be missed.

I suspect instead - considering that this is written and approved by Politico's liberal extremists - that it is indeed “those within Boehner’s tight circle” who listen to Politico instead of America's citizens that are the reasons that he won't be missed!
