Syria is not Afghanistan
Geography is different, strategic goal is different, Syrian leadership is different
The Russians learned a lot since then and have an entire new arsenal plus building a coalition to include Iran, China, Germany ... And a recent “ understanding” with Israel
The Russians won't fight the Afghanistan war again in Syria but I have to wonder about the US
Our Afghan strategy was to fight Russia using Islamic proxies - very unsavory proxies led by people like Bin Laden - who issued a worldwide call for foreign jihadist to join in battle against Russia and then, with Taliban - against Afghan tribal coalition - and we flooded them all with arms and gave the really radical Islamists stinger missiles
Sounds a lot like it is the US not Russia that is repeating a failed war strategy
