And they were put there primarily by German soldiers! Hungarians that tried to feed, aid or even associate with Jews were threatened with the same treatment as the Jews. I know as little girls my Mother and her sister were told by German soldiers that if they continued to take milk to the children of a Jewish family and play with them they would be shot.
The Jews were a key part of the Hungarian social and economic fabric.
The Muslims are not.
One group was castigated and shot.
Another group was welcomed in with open arms.

I didn’t know this. My ancestor left Hungary for England in the 1800’s and I have found a few with the same last name among a list of those who died in Auschwitz. I’m not sure what prompted him to leave before the whole Nazi fervor came about but I’m glad he did!
