Remember the good old days when this was a Free Country?

Emissions testing varies from State to State. I’m not sure how many States even Test Diesel Cars. I think many States don’t require Emissions Testing at all (what a dream).
Wish I lived in one of those.

Take the Drivetrain out and put it in an Older Car that is exempt from Smog Testing. Some States have a rolling Year exception and some States like CA have a fixed Year, which I think is 1976. Human Ingenuity knows no bounds. LOL

Where there’s a will there’s a way, or a Corpse.

diesels may exempt in rural areas but any city that has epa mandated emissions testing all light duty vehicles are tested regardless of fuel type, currently the standards are tier 2 bin 1-5 that all light duty vehicles must meet. these diesels were certified to tier 2 bin 5 to be 50 state legal given that vw cheated they will lose that cert and until they are flashed to the upgraded ecu program a lot of states probably will deny inspection stickers to them. california holds all vehicles to be at least tier 2 bin 5 which is the dirtiest cali also holds most new gasoline cars to be tier 2 bin 2 or better in areas of epa nonattainment. Texas scans every vehicles ecu at every inspection to check for bogus EPROM flashs that people aftermarket tune to increase proformance while defeating the emission regs. i personally know this first hand they catch my Saab every year and make me flash back to the stock rom when it gets plugged into the code box at the inspection station. my Tech 2 programmer for the trionic7 ecu cost well over 3 grand new so most people wont have the means or the tools to flash back and forth normally you pay a pro shop to illigally flash it for a couple hundred bucks. i guess people can do that once a year but most wont they will accept the new rom flash to keep the car street legal. no individual should have the right to pollute more than legally allowed just to gain a few hp, i run my saab on the track mostly not as a daily driver less than 1000 miles a year the rich mix i run on 105 octane is legal off road but no on highway.
