Two solutions: 1) a compact cassette and a 50/34 setup and 2) a fat bike.

Yes I rode today and I pay gas/highway and property taxes here in CO, but I suspect my posting will bring on 10 posts of the video of the dude with the diesel downshifting whenever he passes bikes going up a pass and 40 posts of "you should ride on the sidewalk". Oh well.

Long-distance cyclist here in Tampa FL. I ride average two hours per day. Longer rides monthly. Mostly on bicycle trails but also on major roadways. Florida has the highest rate of bicyclist fatalities in the nation. Motorists here try very hard not to see you. They ignore the three-foot distance passing rule.

I have rear view mirrors zipping by my elbow at 60 mph all the time. I observe the rules of the road and don’t run red lights or stop signs. And wear a helmet and have dual front and rear blinking LED lights for riding at night with a reflective safety vest.

Yes there are many cyclists who are violators of the law and should be ticketed. I’m not sure about funding for bicycle lanes. I think if a state uses fed dollars for a state highway or road project it is required to provide dedicated bicycle lanes on those projects.
