The Trouble with Kids Today (it's all about IQ after all)
The Federalist ^ | 9/19/15 | Murray

...IQ has a substantial direct correlation with measures of success in life, and it is also correlated with a variety of other characteristics that promote success...

...It’s not just that the IQ gap in working-class and upper-middle-class communities has gotten wider. The life penalties associated with low IQ have risen since 1960. If you focus on the economic changes since 1960, those with low IQ have faced a labor market in which the market value of a strong back has dropped while the value of brains has soared...

...If you focus on the reforms and social programs of the 1960s, the reductions in immediate penalties for destructive behavior (e.g., doing drugs, dropping out of school, grabbing purses, having a baby without marriage) had the most effect on people who were impulsive, attracted to immediate gratification, and unable to foresee long-term consequences—qualities associated with low IQ. The effects of such changes in incentives among the smart were much smaller....

Careful, or soon we’ll have subsidized “morning coffee for the poor” programs.

138.
I had a single slice of pizza for breakfast and seven beers later I’m only off two points from my usual score of 140.

“(it’s all about IQ after all)” isn’t in the original article, which looks to be more about social breakdown than IQs.

My brother had an IQ of 148, he would have lived under a bridge before sitting behind a desk. Dropped out of HS the beginning of his junior year, went to work in construction and hot tar roofing, rode with the Hells Angels for awhile.

He never minded hard, back breaking work but couldn’t handle authority or structure. I think the one thing he really enjoyed was playing and writing computer games during the off season, back in the Commadore era.

They can even barely sort of shapes because they’re not sure how to classify them.
Blacks need to be taught Standard English.

I am having difficulty parsing the first statement, in order to come to an agreement on your second statement. Are you black?

In short, the poor will always be with us, because they breed like rabbits.

I think the problem is with the educational system-kids in public schools are not being taught anything beneficial or challenging-they haven’t been for a long time-yes, I sent mine to a private school...

I was a workers comp case manager until I changed careers in 2001-IQ testing was part of the assessment of a client with a work-related injury at the company I worked for-a WAIS score of 87 is within the low normal IQ range-even 68-70 is considered borderline, or to use the politically incorrect term, borderline intellectual functioning, or BIF. Mild mental retardation is below that. I have never heard that the APA changed their scoring because of any race or ethnic group-when was that supposed to have happened?

Why did you think he was stupid? I assume you mean overall, but some people are idiots in certain areas and brilliant in others.

I got fed up and left off being a case manager for work as a construction subcontractor, and I’m perfectly happy...

Seems to be a problem with many high-I.Q. folks. Can't handle authority and structure. My younger daughter's husband has a high-I.Q., but can't and won't work for anyone else. Has problems interacting with other people on a social level. He runs his own business out of his home and is successful inventing electronic gadgets. Now his daughter (my grandchild) is exhibiting many of the same characteristics as a three-year-old. Extremely smart, talking full sentences before she was one, and loves taking things apart and rebuilding them. But has problems with other kids her age, wanting control of every situation. I.Q. is not everything (speaking as someone with a genius I.Q.).

I should add my father thought I was a moron because I didn't like to pursue the activities he liked. And to be fair, in my life I've done some pretty dumb things.

But my father didn't appreciate my positive qualities and delighted in pointing out (in public) my deficiencies. Are you doing that to the actor?

I think it’s a shame that a lot of bright kids go for “desk jobs” simply because that’s what’s expected of them. Dropping out of high school sounds pretty extreme though, hope it never came back to haunt him.
