It is painfully obvious that Trump is already laying the policy groundwork for a general election campaign. Hes not looking past the nomination, but he is also not boxing himself in with policy proposals he wont be able to wriggle out of should he win the nomination.
Basically, hes telling Republican voters the unvarnished truth about where he disagrees with us on a number of bedrock conservative issues, and hes gambling that enough will stick him because they trust him more than the 15 others on existential issues such as immigration, border enforcement, lowering middle class taxes, simplifying the tax code, killing terrorists, and giving as good as he gets from the corrupt media.
He is also counting on the fact that The Base hates #GOPSmartSet enough that we are willing to go with a more moderate candidate if it means bringing down the corrupt, feckless, insulting, useless GOP Establishment.
If he can do this, if Trump can win the nomination by being less than pure on a few key conservative issues, he will enter the general election in a position to expand the Republican base by attracting millions of voters across the Midwest and Rustbelt who for the last 25 years have been ignored and discarded by both Republicans and Democrats.
Im talking about the working class in Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan huge swaths of voters brutalized for generations by stagnant wages and factory closing; men who have lost good paying jobs to illegal immigrants exploited by members-in-good-standing within the predatory Chamber of Commerce.
These are Democrats Reagan Democrats. This is where Trump believes he can expand our base. Note that many of those states are vital swing states,

They HATE that!
He is making a very good bet with that one. Anyone who understands the immigration issue understands that NO OTHER ISSUE MATTERS if we don't win on immigration (which is defined as keeping out 90%+ of the illegals, shipping a bunch out and eliminating future birthright citizenship combined with the anchor baby nonsense that gives us entire villages from Mexico and Somalia based on one kid being born here). If we lose on immigration, then the Dems will have succeeded, 50 years after the 1965 Immigration Bill (sponsored by Teddy Kennedy and written by Bobby Kennedy) in transforming the electorate to guarantee a permanent Dem majority. If we lose on immigration, we lose on EVERY OTHER ISSUE ALSO - GUARANTEED!
Trump understands this, and he knows that most people know it in their bones even if they can't articulate it or quote that statistics chapter and verse. I am willing to let a couple of issues go into hibernation for a while, just to win on immigration and actually be able to keep the culture of our nation. We are being overwhelmed like Rome was in the 3rd and 4th centuries...but it is happening a lot faster because of internal cooperation (i.e. treason).
How conservative will it turn out to be if Trump goes down in flames, causing a lot of people who are sick and tired of the status quo to stay home, thereby guaranteeing another Dem victory over another milquetoast GOPe nominee...and then we get an amnesty (de facto, if not de jure) and the electorate turns into a permanent Dem majority? Not very, IMHO.
Win with Trump, and therefore on immigration, while letting some other issues that we care about go on the back burner...
vs.
...lose with someone else, and therefore on immigration, AND THEREFORE ON LITERALLY EVERY OTHER ISSUE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
I’ll take Door #1. It isn’t the ideal, but we are very, very close to a breakpoint in this nation. The Dems set us up for this in 1965 with the Kennedy immigration bill, and now that seed is about to produce a bumper crop of poisonous fruit for this nation.
He’s more Blue Dog than Hardcore Reaganite—He is a unique character. BUT, he just might get things going again. I don’t see him as a big conservative—he will unshackle business and build Americanism. I think he be a good president. But, if elected I don’t think he will live to see the end of his first term. As I have said before—If he is successful— they will carve his face on a mountain.
