I remember a crash where a plane slid off the runway and crashed in heavy rain in Indonesia. The plane belonged to budget airline Lion Air and their hiring policy and uniforms for the stewardesses were similar to SQ, ie pretty, long legged with silk batik dresses slit up to the thigh.
I always enjoyed looking at them but figured they wouldn’t be much use in a crisis.
Anyway film crews arrived at the scene of the crash very soon and I was impressed by the pictures they showed of these slight little girls (several injured themselves) helping to drag injured men from the wreckage, climbing back into the wreckage to assist trapped passengers and basically standing by their posts and doing their duty when a big hulking man like me would be running away at great speed to avoid an explosion and fire.
You can see some of the footage of the incident here (two minutes in).

I know that most Asian airlines do not allow flight attendants to initiate an evacuation. Some European carriers were that way, too. Not sure if that’s still the case. It’s been a long time since I bailed on the airline life.
