Yes!! Mythbusters had a segment on that. Flushing with the lid up resulted in e-coli everywhere, including on toothbrushes several feet away, even separated by a wall. Gross.

I accidentally locked a cat in the bathroom all day. I was sure the little guy must have peed somewhere, so I took a black light into the bathroom to find the spot (black light reveals urine).

I did not find a cat accident, but the walls were covered in little urine spots. We just moved into the house; obviously, I need to wash the walls! It's gross; I try not to think too much about those spots.
