Two things:
1: New “respectable” occupations for women from nursing, teaching, etc. So middle class daughters had more opportunities to support themselves.
2: Explosion of new middle class jobs for men from clerks to what are now called white collar jobs.

My personal made up theory for today is that as women enter a profession, the men leave. Feminism is a culture killer.
