Manufacturing employment has declined in large part because because our manufacturing sector has become much more efficient at using labor. Unfortunately, workers in the government sector have not become more productive and, as others have noted, often have a large negative effect on private-sector productivity.

Increasingly anything that is being manufactured anywhere on the planet is being manufactured by robots. This trend will continue as will the decline in manufacturing employment.
Those people displaced of course are not going to go without jobs, so increasingly they will demand that government will create one for them. And Libs will increasingly oblige.
