21,995,000 to 12,329,000: Government Employees Outnumber Manufacturing Employees 1.8 to 1

Those employed by government in the United States in August of this year outnumbered those employed in the manufacturing sector by almost 1.8 to 1, according to data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

There were 21,995,000 employed by federal, state and local government in the United States in August, according to BLS. By contrast, there were only 12,329,000 employed in the manufacturing sector.

The BLS has published seasonally-adjusted month-by-month employment numbers for both government and manufacturing going back to 1939. In the first 50 years of the 76-year span since then, manufacturing out-employed government. But in August 1989, government overtook manufacturing as a U.S. employer.

That month, government employed 17,989,000 and manufacturing employed 17,964,000.

Since then, government employment has increased 4,006,000 and manufacturing employment has declined 5,635,000.

The 4,821,000 people employed by government in August 1941 equaled 1 for each 27.7 people in the overall population of 133,402,471. The 21,995,000 employed by government in August 2015 equaled 1 for each 14.6 people in the overall population of 321,191,461.

Increasingly anything that is being manufactured anywhere on the planet is being manufactured by robots. This trend will continue as will the decline in manufacturing employment.

Those people displaced of course are not going to go without jobs, so increasingly they will demand that government will create one for them. And Libs will increasingly oblige.

Manufacturing employment has declined in large part because because our manufacturing sector has become much more efficient at using labor.

Bull, it was off shored.

I don’t understand: So many here at FR extol the benefits of free trade and simultaneously deride those that define protectionism as keeping US manufacturing jobs here, not overseas.

Reading the comments thus far, I wonder where ‘they’ are today?

/s/s

It’s like the Trump-bashers: JR came out supporting Trump and the Trump-bashers at FR seem AWOL (at the time I browsed comments), one trolling author in particular that also supports free trade.

Amazing.

The problem isn't free trade, it's about bloated government, the world's highest corporate taxes and strangling regulations.

The US worker can’t compete with virtual free labor. So put up with high unemployment of our lower classes or try to fight the off shoring madness. I’d rather pay the 4% difference at purchase time then 15-20% at tax time.

Maybe because we understand basic economics and free market principles.

First, let me say that many of our free trade agreements were made by morons who know nothing about business, manufacturing, jobs or economics. Yes, we have flawed free trade agreements. But that does not mean free trade is bad, just that the people elected to expand our trade are flawed.

Keeping US manufacturing jobs here will not benefit anyone. Do you think they will not automate and reduce their need for labor? Do you think they will not invest in R&D to increase productivity?

So, the company keeps 10% of the original jobs here and now the 90% who lost their jobs due to advancements in manufacturing have nowhere else to work because foreign companies will not buy products or start operations in a place that does not trade with them.

You just want your cake and eat it too. You want the foreign nations to buy from us, but we do not buy from them.

Think about that.

If you are a conservative and you understand the constitution, why do you think we have a Commerce Clause? To prevent the states from doing what you are advocating on an international level!

Free trade has lifted more people out of poverty, has made more people wealthy and has saved more lives than all the worlds' social programs combined.

In fact, if the world would reduce their social programs and get with true free trade, more people would be free, there would be less war and mankind would advance farther and faster than ever before.

You want to protect a lazy union worker's job and think that will create prosperity.

Why don’t you read the article I linked and learn something? If the words in the article are too difficult for you, look at the graph in Figure 1.

I skimmed thru it, gloBULList propaganda.

Just what are we importing for the third world? We are importing products that were at one time manufactured in the USA prior to 1970. Does the consumer benefit? Not really, the difference in labor costs improves the bottom line and shareholder profit.

Figure one. Big whoop. What would figure one look like if we hadn't been so stupid as to offshore all of the closed factories since 1970? The blue line would be trending up! and the red line would not be so sharply declining. How great would that be?

You are a brain washed fool gloBULList not worth even talking to you. GloBULList are the enemy of the USA.

Go Trump go!

I was at work, sorry. Manufacturing job, robots to each side of me. But hey, nothing that tariffs can’t “fix.” Of course, we’ll need more goverment jobs to administer them.
