Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society was motivated not only by his feeling that the Blacks had been dealt a poor hand but, more importantly, by a desired to win the black vote in perpetuity for the Democratic Party. He knew he had lost for the short term, the white vote in the South and workers votes in the North, but could count on the national black vote in every election.He did not count on King’s turn away from the administration because of the Vietnam War, but in the long run he was right.
