Speaking at a Labor Day rally in Hampton, Ill., today Hillary Clinton threatened to imprison employers for wage theft.
Were going to go back to enforcing labor laws, Clinton said. Im going to make sure that some employers go to jail for wage theft and all the other abuses that they engage in.
And we are going to make it harder and harder to stop what should be the right of every American: to join a union and bargain collectively through that union, she continued. But, Ill tell you, weve got a fight on our hands.
The presumed 2016 Democratic candidate also endorsed President Obamas executive order mandating government contractors provide employees paid leave.
I was very proud that President Obama said today he is going to require federal contractors to provide seven days of earned paid sick leave, she said. And hes going to fight for paid family leave, something that Ive been fighting for for 30 years and were going to get it done. Its not right to treat working people as though they dont have other responsibilities.
“Wage Theft” is what they call situations where hourly workers are pressured to work off-the-clock so as not to accrue overtime. Walmart is widely accused of pressuring employees to clock out but stay in the building and tidy up under threat of possibly losing their jobs.
Having worked in the retail industry I can tall you that vast numbers of employees are too dumb and/or lazy to figure out how to use the timeclock in any event.
BUT WHERE WILL TRUMP COME DOWN ON IT - is the point.
I say it’s 50-50 he takes the wrong side.
Yes I’d be interested, I’m surprised no one has asked him about it.
Someone will now, with this ruling. I would like to see if any Republicans step in the pile on this one.
I've been employed for a long, long time. Never heard of such a thing. Sounds like red meat for the base. "Yeah! The Man is stealing from us!!!"
I've also had bosses who were downright abusive, employers who expected me to work ridiculous (120+/week) hours, others who expected ridiculous (90+%) travel, and so on.
One thing that all of those lousy jobs had in common? I could leave at any time. Of course, I'd not have job or salary to fall back on ..... but continuing to go there was a *choice*, just as looking for better opportunities was a choice, as well.
The other thing that they all had in common was that I was paid. Had my paychecks stopped - maybe that's the "wage theft" that Hillary! was alluding to - then I'd have stopped going to work, pretty much the minute the first paycheck bounced.
Hillary: I Am Going To Make Some Employers Go to Jail.
Ole Screech already thinking of arranging for company during her term.
In then end, if socialism was a workable concept, wouldn’t there be a socialist country where every single citizen were given everything they need to live by their government? Better yet, why don’t all socialist go there?
This smelly obese criminall is going to put her self in jail? She’s an employer.
That’s rich. The VP of Crime Incorporated threatening anybody else with jail.
If she does, it would be a small grocery store owner in rural Texas. No way she's going to touch any significant contributor - but when scapegoats and examples are needed it's open season on small business...for both parties.
When I lived in Michigan and the state bureaucrats wanted to make an example out of someone they picked on the poor Dairy Queen franchisee in my town.
