Preserving cultural identity aside, can Germany (and Austria) afford what it is evidentally doing here?

I see two strong trends in confluence in Germany. One is German "self hate" - after WWII, nationalism and cultural pride were very much unfashionable, and still are. Second is the promotion of the super-national banker's state and EU project of the nanny state built on massive debt and secular, left ideology.

both reinforce each other and lead many Germans to believe they are going to create a brave new world.

Don’t leave out the potential for the aryan type holdovers and their shared hatred of jews— ie. the undercover nazi/socialists from E. Germany (now united) who continue in positions of power. Angela Merkel, for example. An “ostie” socialist (a red, actually) re-born as a nationalist socialist of European Union leadership desires.
