I’ve camped all over the West for the last forty five years. I’ve NEVER seen a black person camping. I have seen Chinese and Latino, but no blacks.
I did see a few black people in the national parks at Yellowstone a few years ago. Some worked at the concessions.
We only camp during the summer, when it’s guaranteed to be hot.
There aren’t that many black people in the West, period.
We’ve camped on the east coast and in the south and have seen black people. One place we camped in Virginia, there was a black RV club from Richmond all camped together.
Wherever there is a small fishing lake on the east coast, you’re likely to find black people fishing - usually several generations and they’re having a great time.
We have gone tent camping since the 1960’s the kids were little and I have never noticed many Black people in the area. Some did and do come out during the day to fish but leave when it’s dark. Don’t recall seeing any when we were hiking or snow or water skiing either.
What we have noticed lately is that there is a preponderance of RV’s with A/C and satellite TV antennas. Don’t understand people’s inability to unplug for a couple of days. Not sure why they just don’t stay home. Totally different culture now.
“Ive camped all over the West for the last forty five years. Ive NEVER seen a black person camping. I have seen Chinese and Latino, but no blacks.”
This may be cultural. I have a good black friend with whom I work sports car races. We decided for a two-day event, to just roll up in the back of my pickup at the track. Well, it was cold and slightly wet, so I wasn’t surprised when at dinner he turned to me and said: “I’m not an outdoor Negro, I’m a house Negro, we should go find a motel!”
The wife and I have visited numerous western nps and nms in the last decade and more. We just returned from another two week trip out west. I could count the numbers of black people at those parks and monuments on both hands and still have a few fingers left.
