Burning Man founder Larry Harvey has countered criticism of the lack of racial diversity at the festival by saying that part of the reason there are so few black attendees (known as burners) is that I dont think black folks like to camp as much as white folks.
In an interview with the Guardian, Harvey vowed that were not going to set racial quotas, defended the presence of rich Silicon Valley executives at the festival, and said he will personally go undercover this week to investigate the luxurious camps of ultra-wealthy tech bosses said by the New York Times to boast chefs, air conditioning and servants.

LOL! Or how to overheat your foregrip until it bursts in to flames. Assclowns like this give “common sense” gun owners a bad name.
Only rich white people on drugs go out to the desert to experience homelessness for a weekend kick.
We have gone tent camping since the 1960’s the kids were little and I have never noticed many Black people in the area. Some did and do come out during the day to fish but leave when it’s dark. Don’t recall seeing any when we were hiking or snow or water skiing either.
What we have noticed lately is that there is a preponderance of RV’s with A/C and satellite TV antennas. Don’t understand people’s inability to unplug for a couple of days. Not sure why they just don’t stay home. Totally different culture now.
“Maybe Black Folk dont like old stinking hippies.”
Or maybe Black folks don’t like pretending they are homeless for a week. Pooping on a campfire isn’t very sanitary.
LOL! Weekend hell. It lasts the entire week. Heard they had some dust storms on Thursday and near freezing temps the last couple of night.
I guess I never grew up.
To me camping is looking around, seeing that there are no other people within 150 miles, throwing the bedroll on the ground, building a fire ring or pit, grabbing the shotgun and going out to kill something to eat.
Most folks don’t know it, but you can catch fish with a 12 gauge to.
Water, salt, pepper, OK got it all, lets go.
And satellite t.v., which I’ve never understood.
Oh! So that’s why I enjoyed 3 day Phish shows so much in my younger years. No “people who annoy you”!
Recently there was a story in the WSJ about how many youts (of all races) are unable to swim or ride a 2 wheel bicycle.
It was amazingly large numbers.
That was pretty much unheard of in my era (50s).
I found a nice little place on the shore of Lake Superior at Grand Marais Michigan. I never thought I would like it but its a little campground on the edge of town. (Grand Marais Michigan is very small)
We’re going to camp this winter, the colder the better.Arctic tent with wood stove.
Over time, I went from tent, to tent trailer, to camping trailer, to small motorhome, to large motorhome, to nearest lodge or expensive nearby hotel.
They do go on cruise ships, so they’ve overcome that atavistic memory.
I am trying to think of some things that Americans of northern European ancestry got hard-wired to avoid over the generations.
Well the amenities on board are certainly a lot better than Dutch sailing slavers of the 1700s.
N. Euro- atavistics:
Rats— as in... the Plague. And, monarchies.
I think camping has a bad connotation for many black people because they think of old times when runaway slaves were camping out in the woods running away from the slave catchers. They also think of the Rosewood massacre when blacks had to camp out in the woods to escape the Klu Klux Klan. I think it is history that has taken the joy out of camping for them.
“Criticism due to the lack of racial diversity.”
Yeah, because he controls who attends. The stupid, it burns.
No riots or BlackLivesMatter on my river trips. Guess it is kind of a whitey pastime. Beside, da’ water not only cold, it be deep too!
IIRC, more natives are killed in rivers by hippopotamus than by crocs & big cats combined. Hippos have very long teeth.
Or, “What’s that black stuff between elephants’ toes? Slow natives!”

Could it be they choose not to spend their money that way? I own an RV and enjoy camping in state parks. I have no desire to attend Burning Man. I also have no desire to attend Bike Week, an annual gathering of black motorcyclists, in Myrtle Beach or the Super Bowl (attended by both blacks and whites). Personal choice is what individual freedom is all about. It has nothing to do with racism no matter how much academics, leftist politicians, race hustlers, and mainstream media journalists want to portray every activity and decision as being driven by race.
