According to this, the reason was that they were of opposing allegiances during wartime, not primarily because Assyrians were Christian. I don't know the whole story, but perhaps you don't either.

Yep, considering that Christians have actually fled to Kurdish protection from ISIS lately, I doubt it be an anti-Christian thing. The Kurds also weren’t the only party fighting at the time.
