With technology changing rapidly I am looking for a solution to take payment for goods and services via credit card through my smart phone. Many small time operators have been using Square Reader for their point of purchase reader and my main concern is their policy of not allowing purchases of guns and ammunition.
I support the Second Amendment and I don't want to use Square Reader if there are better alternatives out there. Square Reader takes 2.75% per transaction as well. Does anyone use another reader with a better constitutional record and/or lower fees?
Thanks Thackney!
You make up the invoices to bill and get paid. Unless your business checking acct. to which the electronic payment is sent is blatantly obvious (say by title or logo) they’ve no way of determining this. Exception being the $20K limit of sales at which they would issue a 1099 to feds.
They all take about 2.5% m/l on the charges, covers the card provider charges. Just some are more gun-friendly than others.
We are also doing a pilot program selling popcorn using Square Reader for Cub Scouts. At tonight’s meeting I’m going to bring this issue up.

Despite its immense popularity, Square is not without its downsides in fact, Squares flaws are no small matter. Troublingly, Square offers very little in the way of customer service, and many business owners have complained about Square withholding funds and shutting down accounts without sufficient cause. Not cool, Square. Not cool.
While Square was one of the only mobile payment games in town five years ago, this is, fortunately, no longer the case. If you want to offer customers mobile payment options using a service with a more merchant-friendly reputation, you can test out several robust Square alternatives that fit this profile. Heck, even if youre happy with Square, you might consider offering an additional mobile payment choice to give customers more options. As follows is my breakdown of the top Square alternatives.
See link for list
I’m in that business. Square is fine if you have a micro business selling feather earings at the farmer’s market or something, but if you are doing more than $5,000 a month in sales, you should get a real merchant account. All the better processors have devices like square that will plug into an smart phone or iPad, but the rates should be far, far lower than 2.75%.
Be careful though. There is no reason to sign a long term contract, and you should never be subject to early termination fees. 95% of the processors out there will try to get you to go that way.
I have real expertise on this. If you would like help, send me a private message.
