Europe died in Auschwitz.

I'd argue it was 1914. The rest has been death spasms. And it was the French and British at the war's end, drawing arbitrary lines across the Ottoman Empire as they divvied up spheres of influence, that created the a whole lot of the Middle East problems we have today.
