Australian 'Great Escape' hero Paul Royle dies aged 101

'Paul Royle, the last remaining Australian to take part in the 1944 Great Escape, has died aged 101.

The former RAF Flight Lieutenant passed away in Perth on Sunday.

His death leaves just one survivor from the iconic breakout on 24 March, 1944, ex RAF Squadron Leader Dick Churchill, from Devon in the UK.

The pair were part of an audacious escape effort from the notorious Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp in Sagan, some 160 kilometres east of Berlin.'

I loved Paul Brickhill’s book, “The Great Escape,” as a teenager and as an adult.

Would it even be possible to out-do the original GE flick with the likes of McQueen, Bronson, Donald Plesense, James Garner?

What an all star cast. Heck...I think I’ll pull out my old VHS tape and watch it this weekend. lol

Two guys who were said to be the inspiration for Steve McQueen’s character, the cooler king died last year. One was British, the other was an American who flew for the RCAF, and moved to Britain after the war and became a Communist. Truth is stranger than fiction.
