Staff and students in the University of Tennessee Office for Diversity and Inclusion want people to think beyond the "he/she" pronouns and are encouraging use of gender-neutral pronouns such as "xe," "xym" and "xyr." Their suggestion hasn't quite caught on -- and some state legislators aren't impressed. Not everyone in society identifies on a strict male-or-female basis, according to diversity office staff, so they are asking people to be aware some may identify themselves with a name and gender that's not strictly male or female. It is not UT's policy.
"We should not assume someone's gender by their appearance, nor by what is listed on a roster or in student information systems," Donna Braquet, director of UT's Pride Center, wrote in a newsletter on Tuesday. "Transgender people and people who do not identify within the gender binary may use a different name than their legal name and pronouns of their gender identity, rather than the pronouns of the sex they were assigned at birth." She suggested instructors learn students' chosen names and chosen pronouns during the first few weeks of classes.
"We are familiar with the singular pronouns she, her, hers and he, him, his, but those are not the only singular pronouns. In fact, there are dozens of gender-neutral pronouns," Braquet wrote. State Rep. Bill Dunn, R-Knoxville, said he thought the suggestion was a joke. "And then I found out it was true, at which point I thought, 'Are we really paying somebody to come up with this stuff?' " he said. Dunn, a graduate of UT, said he would rather see public money spent on other academic areas such as math or technology. The Pride Center is fiscally supported by the state school...

Thoughcrime is alive today and quickly and ruthlessly enforced in America's schools, corporations, government agencies, and everywhere, though it is known by another name: Political Incorrectness. TU's thinkpol have not yet begun enforcement of thoughtcrime for incorrectly addressing someone who identifies as a different gender, however as a precursor, they are trying to shame students into thinking and saying what they want them to say. There can be no disagreement with political correctness as defined by "the party" in the USA. The prevailing politically correct Zeitgeist of thought and behavior forces Americans to live a lie by denying reality. Fear of thoughtcrime prosecution compels cognitive dissonance. If reality contradicts the "the party", it must be eradicated for PC is truth.
What can save us from this new totalitarian system? Perhaps only believing the words Jesus spoke to Pontius Pilate...John 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
I prefer the pronoun “it” for the likes of Bruce Jenner.
Be easier, and more economical, to just shut down the University of Tennessee Office for Diversity and Inclusion.
Lord o' mercy. The parents who paid for their kids to go to UT deserve what they get.
Those of us who have money taken from us by force to pay for kids to go to these schools don't deserve it.
Agreed, simplify the whole matter and use “he”, “she”, and “it.”
No wonder so many young kids are loony tunes these days. Schools are driving them nuts!!!
How big a say does this Department have at the University, other than in their weird little classes?
I think I would start to use my own created language when talking to these college professors. If it doesn’t matter about pronoun, than it doesn’t matter about language at all.
Noisemaking from Republican politicians to create an emotional issue for their re-election next time does not mean much to me anymore.
The state funds the university to some extent.
The GOP controlled legislature and governor can simply shut off the funds entirely saying they will fund education but not indoctrination.
Its tough action time, not emotional words time.
Political showboating doesn’t impress me anymore.
Clearly they have lost their minds.
and: "idiot" (for her)
plural form can be: "Idiots"
general form: "Freakin' Idiots"
How do we pronounce these pronouns??? If we mispronounce them does that make us bigoted???
What about combining “she” and “it”?
Translation...
The University of Tennessee is officially a cult.
University of Tennessee thinks they are God and control the language. This is Cult behavior.
Imagine if David Koresh or Jim Jones said this to their followers. People would say that’s crazy! Oh but when University of Tennessee declares THEY CONTROL THE LANGUAGE, then that’s okay....
I would tell those BASTARDS to go to h@ll! They are NOT my God, and I’m NOT their slave.
I remember when Vanderbilt kicked the Christians off campus, and the TN legislature refused to hold back any of the considerable state money flowing to that private school. Now one of their state schools is going PC-mad, and I suspect they won’t do anything again. Or maybe they’ll ban the Confederate flag; they’ll do that.
What’s amazing is that this crap is going on in Knoxville - the buckle of the Bible belt. What are the Knoxvillian saying about this?
They can’t do that, if they cannot understand what you are saying. :)
Does that include “gay?”
Isaiah 5:20
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; and ... that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! ...
