After poor Hannah Graham was abducted last year in Charlottesville, Va., and later found dead, this was something everyone seemed afraid to say.
She was staggering drunk, lost, alone, and dressed like a hooker in a pretty busy university town at 3 a.m. She could not have been doing more to attract assault and death if she had been actively trying.
But of course I'm just a paternalistic sexist.

Above all, I think the helplessness brought on by alcohol and/or drugs does more to put women and men in danger than people care to admit. Police and criminals say that crimes of opportunity occur when the potential victim is not paying attention to her surroundings.
