It gets back to the old question of what makes someone a Jew, and the common reply is that you are a Jew if your mother was a Jew. Jewishness is therefore an ethnic, not a religious distinction. Except there are Jews of very different ethnicities, e.g., Sephardic, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, etc. And, of course, a non-Jew can convert to Judaism. So it is confusing.
At any rate, most American Jews probably identify more with their Democratic politics than with the concept of Zionism, which is a religious-based concept, largely based on Genesis, and therefore alien to them.
