Rep. William “Cold Cash” Jefferson.
A colleague and I were at a meeting in the Florida panhandle and decided to drive back on Highway 90 at least to NOLA on our way back to Houston. First time I had been through that area by car and was amazed at how beautiful it was. Vowed to return later that year and spend some time just wandering around and looking at things. The next week the hurricane hit. At least I was able to see it in all it’s original glory.
We have returned to Pass Christian every summer for the last five years and have noticed some rebuilding, certainly not like what has occurred in the Orange Coast area in Alabama. I love the sculptures they have created out of the tree remains. The depth of the storm surge remains visible, perhaps because we are used to seeing hurricane damage on our coast. We have been in a kayak pretty much all around the bayou area at Pass Christian and try to imagine what once stood where there is now only an occasional piece of wrought iron fencing protruding.
I remember going to Galveston a couple of weeks after Ike. In many areas there was just nothing left other than perhaps rebar where a house once stood. Just absolutely nothing. The power of wind and water is unbelievable.
Thanks for sharing.
