Might want to bear in mind that Wallace was a Democrat.
He ran as an Independent in 1968, and when he returned to the Democratic fold in the '72 primaries, he got shot and damn near killed for his trouble, thanks to one Arthur Bremer and whoever was behind that attempted assassination. Then the 'RATS ended up being taken over by the left wing McGovern wing of the party, and we all know how that turned out for them.

He ran as an Independent in '68 after Robert Kennedy pretty much sewed up the nomination. Then, when Kennedy got shot, Humphrey slid into the role and Wallace knew he had no chance as a Democrat.
But Wallace was always a Democrat.
