Over the last few years I’ve seen a TON of articles about the epidemic of female teachers having sex with their male students - yet not a one about a male teacher having sex with a female student. I wondered why men don’t do it any more.

Then, about four months ago, I saw the stats. Currently, men are caught about twice as much as women. Then it hit me. When we read about a man having sex with underage girls, we consider it a crime, when we hear about “hot” teachers having sex with underage boys we wish OUR teacher was that hot when we were in school. It’s a different psychology.

Plus, “Man bites dog” is always more interesting than “Dog bites man”.

It is a double standard. Myself, if the kid was 12/13 years old, throw the book no matter if it was male on female, female on male or homosexual/lesbian. I tend to be libertarian on this subject (OK, I'm ready for the rubber chickens to fly, I've been hit like Svengoolie many times B-)). First off, I think 16 as the age of consent is a good compromise, a compromise being a negotiated deal where people get part of want but not all but that is life many times. The kid was 15. 15/16 is a grey area. Sex is natural and it is up to each of us when we become parents to teach our values to our kids and enforce them as they grow up so when they reach the grey area, they can know right from wrong and have good thought processes to just say "no." I know I'll get into more trouble about this but since, again, sex is a natural part of coming of age, sometimes I think we are too uptight in this country on one hand and too loose on another such as the attention we draw to it in our media. We are very schizoid. Reality is somewhere in the middle.

I think myself, I was 15 when I had a hot English teacher, she was 40-ish, been to France and owned three Corvettes. I would admit, given certain circumstances, I could have been tempted. Would I fall into it? Hard to say, I'm human like all of us but most likely (95% chance) I would have not since Mom taught me good morals. Even so, there is always that chance, that's life.

It's up to all of us to teach our kids to make good decisions and to instill responsibility and accountability into them and hope or the best. Being human, mistakes will be made, sometimes with no consequences, other times with a lot of them. "By the grace of God go I" as the saying goes and as my father taught me, we all have to go it alone sometime.

Well, I'm ready for the rubber chickens. B-)
