The issue? Illegal immigration.
The answer? The Republican candidate had an answer. If he were elected president, the illegals swarming into the United States from Mexico would have to go.
No, the Republican candidate was not Donald Trump. The candidate in question was Dwight D. Eisenhower. And on Election Day of 1952, Ike was elected the nations 34th president in a landslide.
On June 17, 1954, using what today would be considered a deeply politically incorrect term, Operation Wetback began. Eisenhower had appointed a West Point classmate and veteran of the 10st Airborn, General Joseph Jumpin Joe Swing to head the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The Eisenhower directive to Swing was Trumpian: they have to go, round them up and move them out. And in the kind of military style that Eisenhower himself had employed in organizing the massive logistics of the D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe, General Swing went to work.
The General used buses. He used trains. He used ships. Most importantly he used the agents of the U.S. Border patrol. According to the Christian Science Monitor some 750 Border Patrol agents began sweeping north from Texas, eventually moving through Arizona, California, Utah, Idaho, and as far north as Chicago.

Sounds like a plan. Let’s do a repeat under the next president.
I think they deported over 2,000,000
Judges and lawyers will slow it down this time no lawyers back then
The rest of the politicians running are for more immigration . Or everything they ‘ve done is for more immigration .
What did the politicians DO to stop illegals or immigrants? Nothing but the opposite obama trade( Trojan horse for immigration), H-1B visas etc.
Oh sure now that Trump is being tough on immigration now they are flip flopping and saying tough things / Too late. All lies to get elected.
In the last few decades immigrants legal and illegal have only increased in the numbers that are invading and government has grown every month it seems. they talk a good game but that's all it is talk to get elected and to make tons of money
Charles Krauthammer and George Will would not agree.
How about we deport ‘em and they can sue to get back in. But Trump can deny them visas to get back in for the court date so they’ll miss it. Hehe...
For the record, official ICE records show that there are already at this time nearly 900,000 fugitive criminal illegal aliens who were slated for deportation but have been released and skipped bail.
It's pretty much beyond dispute that these 900K illegals must be deported even under the most liberal amnesty imaginable.
So there you have it, even in the best of all worlds inhabited sole by rainbows and unicorns, close to one million illegals now running free due to our insane catch and release programs for seriously hardcore and violent predatory illegal alien criminals, are going to have to be deported no matter what.
Wiki says it failed in part because the deported Mexicans kept coming back in over the border.
So the wall is an essential component to making Operation: Wetback 2.0 a success.
I like Ike bump
Some esitmates 2.3 to 2.5 million. About half self-deported...from the article
."By September, 80,000 had been taken into custody in Texas, and an estimated 500,000 to 700,000 illegals had left the Lone Star State voluntarily."
Maybe they can get lawyers AFTER the fact...from Mehico.
Yeah...they would actually have to pay for them instead of the US citizens paying for illegal’s lawyers. I’m sure the lawyers will be happy with this...right?

Maybe...perhaps a condition of (legal) re-entry into this country will be self-deportation. If you get caught here after a certain date, maybe inauguration day, then you’re ineligible to ever legally come to this country again.
Use a carrot and a stick and the immigration lawyers may not find too many customers.
I like Ike’s “Operation Wetback.”
I've never understood why "wetback" is so despised. It refers to someone who illegally enters the US by swimming across the Rio Grande. Someone please tell me why that is offensive.
